An unusual route into music, Sam Baker at 32, was travelling in Peru in 1986 when the train he was on was blown up by a terrorist bomb. Brain damage, renal failure, gangrene, the mangling of his left hand, which led him to relearn the guitar left-handed, were the antecedents to his debut album Mercy in 2004. This was followed by Pretty World in 2007.
